Tilarán, the neighboring town is in the center of farmlands and ranches and features an abundance of shopping, banks, a post office, medical facilities and some of the best restaurants in the area.  From there, you have easy access to the western beaches of Nicoya and Guanacaste or to the famous Monteverde Cloud Forest.  It is an unpretentious and easy going place with a comfortable climate and a variety of local diversions including the popular Fiesta de Dias Civicas.

This area remains one of the least-developed tourism regions in Costa Rica, but not for lack of resources or charms. It does, after all, have Lake Arenal, a man-made lake with an area of 86 sq. km (34 sq. miles), making it the largest lake in Costa Rica, surrounded by rolling hills that are partly pastured and partly forested.

The lake has great fishing and windsurfing, and offers a scenic drive around the eastern shore with excellent lake and volcano views. Boating, canoing, riding, mountain biking and hiking are all popular pastimes. There are many lodges around the lake to provide accommodations for visitors. The lake's other claim to fame is its rainbow-bass fishing. These fighting fish are known in Central America as guapote and are large members of the cichlid family.
